Jeff Notton

Jeff Notton has written for film, television, audio dramas, sketches and short stories.

While he has directed a number of short films, Kirsty’s Promise is his debut feature as a director.

Jeff lives in Bristol, where Kirsty’s Promise was shot entirely on location.

  • “the original idea for this story comes from a real-life situation of women compelled to continue to sell sex to feed their drug addiction despite the presence of a serial killer targeting women in sex-work. The desperate need for heroin or crack outweighs not only the inherent dangers of this work, but even the increased deadly threat of a brutal murderer. Sadly, this situation is not unusual, with many cases of women in sex-work being murdered, and violence towards vulnerable women in general, is common. I was determined to tell the story from the viewpoint of the women caught in this vicious cycle, rather than depicted just as victims, as in most police procedurals. Extensive research has been made in writing the screenplay, including testimonies from women with addiction issues, drugs councilors, and help / advice from charities such as One25 and Bristol Drugs Project”.

ACTRESS/PRODUCER

Simone McIntyre

Simone hails from London, and her work as an actress and producer has resulted in multiple awards at BAFTA and Oscar qualifying film festivals, including Best Experimental Film, Best Thriller, and Best Cinematography awards. Simone's projects frequently focus on stories about frustrated dreamers who refuse to accept the limitations placed on them.

She works closely as a creative producer with writers, develops projects from pre-production to distribution and specialises in leading international teams. Simone also works as a voice artist and is a regular on The Guardian Podcasts. Kirsty’s character appealed to her as she is a strong female protagonist.

Sarah Smither

Sarah has lit and shot 40+ short films and 4 features over a long career, which began in London in 2001 and is now centred around the South West. Sarah’s work has been selected for many film festivals across Europe, the US and beyond.

Sarah is a great collaborator and sensitive leader. She has worked with Jeff on several film projects and was particularly drawn to the strong female characters in Kirsty’s Promise.

Sarah is driven by human stories and the power of moving image to connect people and effect positive change.

Bear Thompson is an actress from Devon and based in Bristol. Kirsty’s Promise is her debut feature film and she really enjoyed working on it. Bear can also be seen in Channel 4’s TrueLove.
